Houston-based honky-tonk performer, Leslie Sloan grabbed the attention of the national music media recently and scored two tight reviews for her efforts on her new CD "Between the Whiskey and the Wine". In his review for the publication Music Row, country music industry veteran Robert Oermann opened his comments with a solid, "Holy mackerel!" "Miss Leslie is a barroom chanteuse from the old school," Oermann said. "The title tune to her CD finds her bluesy ballad belting in a smoky atmosphere swirling with a steel guitar. The album is a revelation. This gal is walking in the high heels of Dottie West and Patsy Cline." Miss Leslie and her band, The Juke Jointers, were also profiled in the October issue of SPIN magazine. SPIN, one of the country's leading music magazines, tends to report on any music genre other than that reminiscent of Patsy Cline, Connie Smith and George Jones, so the review came as a surprise to Sloan. In its story "Houston - Rock City", SPIN wrote about the deep rooted music scene in Southeast Texas including clubs and performers such as Fitzgerald's, Shoeshine Charley's Big Top Lounge, ZZ TOP and . . . Miss Leslie & Her Juke Jointers. The review by writer Chris Gray admits that "Houston isn't exactly honky-tonk heaven, but the sorrowful lyrics and steely solos of fiddle-playing frontwoman Miss Leslie and her band will have you thinking otherwise." Gray went on to call Sloan a kindred spirit to fellow Southeast Texan George Jones, and praised her latest CD, "Between the Whiskey and the Wine".
