Controversial Silicon Valley advertising startup NebuAd drops its plan to sell deep packet inspection technology to ISPs after Congress and public interest groups slam the privacy implications of deep packet inspection. NebuAd suffered through a summer of losing customers and congressional hearing before bailing on the plan that promised ISPs additional revenue sources through DPI.

Red Hat is jumping into the desktop virtualization market with its acquisition of Qumranet, which leverages the open-source KVM (Kernel Virtual Machine) hypervisor for its Solid ICE desktop virtualization platform. LinkedIn, the social network that professionals also use as a messaging and collaoration tool, joins forces with financial news site CNBC. The deal will see LinkedIn's networking functionality integrated into CNBC.com, allowing users to share and discuss news with their professional contacts. Wireless microphone maker Shure says it has been anticipating Federal Communications Commission rules banning the use of wireless microphones in the 700MHz spectrum for years. Problems, though, still remain for wireless microphone users as the FCC proposes limiting use of the devices to the interference buffer zones between Channels 2 and 51, the same space being eyed by Google, Microsoft, Motorola and other tech companies for the delivery of unlicensed wireless broadband and other advanced services.

The first Dell low-cost notebook is called the Inspiron Mini 9 and this small laptop looks to compete against the likes of the HP Mini-Note, the Lenovo IdeaPad S10 and the Asus Eee PC.
